Orientation Courses
Pet & Groom HS005:  One-hour orientation class that allows young horse fans to get
comfortable and gain confidence around horses; petting, grooming, and riding.

Horsin' Around HS105: Two-hour orientation for adults, suitable for students with no horse
experience. Get up close and personal with these amazing animals as you learn about their nature and
the human-horse partnership. Classroom and hands-on instruction in handling, grooming, and riding the
horse.  

Horse Studies Courses
Meet the Horse HS101: Introduction to the wonderful world of horses. Classroom and hands-on
instruction. This course is suitable for students with no horse experience. Two-hour weekly sessions for
four weeks.

Herd of Two HS201: Building the relationship between you and the horse, based on trust and
respect. In this herd of two, you must be the herd leader! Two-hour weekly sessions for four weeks.
Prerequisite: HS101

Horse for Me HS301: Students will practice horse ownership by providing care, feeding, grooming,
and exercise for their assigned equine. Two-hour weekly sessions for four
weeks. Prerequisite: HS201

Riding Skills Courses
Western Riding RW411: Instruction and coaching in western pleasure/equitation events;
student does all pre- and post-ride horse care to include grooming, tacking up, cooling down, and tack
maintenance. Two hours. Prerequisite: HS301

English Riding RE 421: Instruction and coaching in English pleasure/equitation events; student does
all pre-and post-ride horse care to include grooming, tacking-up, cooling down, and tack maintenance.
Two hours. Prerequisite: HS301

Distance Riding RD 431: Instruction and coaching in long-distance riding for the sport of
endurance, competitive trail, cross-country, et al; student does all pre- and post-ride horse care to include
grooming, tacking up, cooling down, and tack maintenance.  Two hours. Prerequisite: HS301

Horse Care Courses
Natural Hoof Care, HC305:  Gain an understanding of the horse’s hooves inside and out; basic hoof
anatomy and how to promote functional, healthy bare hooves.

Equine Massage Therapy, HC310: Learn techniques and benefits of equine massage.

Merit Badge Courses – Boy Scouts
Horsemanship for Scouts, BS121 (8 hours): This intensive course includes all requirements to
earn BSA Horsemanship Merit Badge. Eight hours

Merit Badge Courses - Girl Scouts
Love, Hug, and Groom (Fun Patch), GS100: A horse learning experience that includes stable
manners (safety), petting, treats, grooming, barn tour, and more! One hour.

Just Horsin’ Around (GSSJC Try-It), GS105: Earn this Try-It patch as you learn about horse
safety, parts of the horse; grooming, stabling, and more! Two hours.

GS 110 Combined Workshop: LHG & Try-It: Earn both the fun patch and try-it in one three-hour
course.

Horse Fan, GS131:  This course teaches the requirements to earn the Horse Fan patch. Two hours.

Horse Rider, GS231: This course teaches the requirements to earn the Horse Rider patch. Four
hours.
          
Horse Sense (Interest Project Patch), GS301: Individualized instruction and training to work on
the skills and technology requirements of the Horse Sense Interest Project. Two-hour weekly sessions
until project is completed.

Workshops and Seminars

Principles of Foundation Horsemanship HS151: Build your confidence and skills, whether just
starting your horse relationship or seeking to improve it. Learn about horse nature and behavior, and how
to see things from the horse's point of view. Improve your interaction as you are coached through simple

Practice I, Foundation Horsemanship RS251: Improve your riding skills as you apply strategies
of foundation horsemanship. This mounted class works on achieving timing, balance, and feel; refining
your body position; learning steps to back up with ease; improving your rein management and

Prerequisitie: Principles of Foundation Horsemanship

Matter of Respect, Part I RS415A: This workshop introduces Don Hutson and his "Matter of
Respect" philosophy of horsemanship. Topics include developing the mindset and attitude one should
have with their horse; techniques to improve the horse's willingness and respect; how to do an "attitude
check" on the horse before mounting (very important if rider is unfamiliar with horse); how to gain control
on the ground; how to "talk" in horse language, and more. Bring your own horse or audit. Students who
have completed HS101 may lease an onsite horse for this workshop. Four hours.

Matter of Respect, Part II RS415B: Continuation of Don Hutson’s "Matter of Respect" course and
is for students who have an understanding of the safety and control techniques presented in Part I. Under
the instructor's guidance, mounted students will practice their riding skills using a single soft rein.
Mounted work will include riding in a group, negotiating patterns and/or trail obstacles, and encountering
spooky objects. Specific issues of interest to the class, such as trailer loading, water crossing, standing
still, etc., may be addressed as time permits. Bring your own horse or audit. Students who have
completed HS201 may lease an onsite horse for this workshop. Four hours.

Riding Skills Workshop, RS420: This course is about learning how to train, ride, manage, and
enjoy the horse—safely and with common sense and confidence. Students will be instructed on reining;
leg, hand, and body cues; backing up, head set, flexion, and balanced riding. Whether hitting the trail or
entering the show ring, students will come away with a new insight and renewed enthusiasm. This is a
mounted, one-day workshop, bring your own horse, audit, or lease an onsite horse. Instructor: Jerry Lee
